Allysia + Matt {The Wedding Book}

It’s been almost a year since I updated my site with any new content. Some may have thought I just gave up and quit, but nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is that I let the updates here slip because at the end of 2009 my family and I moved to South TX to help take care of my elderly parents. At the same time, I have been working on launching a new studio that will focus on modern and contemporary senior portraits, or how I like to call it, “Rule Breaking Senior Photography”. The new studio name is Ma Vie Studio and it’s opening it’s doors on 8/4/2010.

I photographed weddings until the end of 2009, then for most of 2010 I have taken a sabbatical to focus on Ma Vie Studio, but as Ma Vie is just about ready to open it’s doors, I have now turned my focus to Rosy’s Photography and I have some exciting changes coming.

Now, Allysia and Matt’s wedding last year was a fenomenal wedding and I was truly blessed to be a part of their special day. Since their wedding last year was one of my career highlights, I decided to commemorate the re-focusing of Rosy’s Photography with an album design from their beautiful wedding. This is part 2 of Allysia and Matt’s wedding story. A few days ago I shared a few images from their rehearsal dinner and now, here is a small taste of the images of their wedding. I am so blessed to have been a part of such wonderful people. Allysia and Matt were just awesome, they were laid back, they enjoyed their wedding day, their family and their friends. Allysia told me during our planning session that she wanted some “different” pictures, and those we created, believe it or not, at midnight. At Big Foot Country Club in Fontana, there are 7 ponds, which are sacred ponds made by native indians from that area a long time ago. When the country club opened, they brought a member of the tribe to bless the 7 ponds. It was next to one of these ponds with a small waterfall that we captured the last images of the night. Goes to show how important the photography was for Allysia and Matt, even at midnight, they were willing to go out and create something unique, something that I know they will treasure forever. I have been blessed to be a part of the most amazing wedding in my career. The locations were amazing, beautiful, and the lighting was simply perfect, but most of all, it was the people. Allysia and Matt are two of the most wonderful people you can ever meet. They are fun, passionate about life, and they have wonderful families that love them dearly. The following is a little taste of the images I was able to capture for them during the rehearsal for their wedding. I had the privilege of working with Jessica & Kevin for their wedding pictures. Jessica & Kevin will stand as one of the most memorable weddings for me. When I met them and they told me that the bridal party were their kids, the ring bearer was their nephew, the flower girl was their niece, it became apparent that their wedding was very centered around their family. I had an amazing time and I am truly blessed to have been part of their special day. Jessica is a real state attorney and boy did she give me a real scare when she sent out the time line and wedding details, because she sent it in her firm’s letterhead and when I saw it, my heart sank and my brain started racing at 100 miles an hour as to what I had done, if I was going to jail, if I was loosing my house, etc. Then I saw that it was the time line…let’s just say that my heart took a few moments coming back up to my chest. Now we laugh so hard about it, but it was hilarious. Thanx Jess & Kevin, for sharing your wonderful family and your amazing wedding with me. I am working on Amy and Kevin’s images and I just love this image of Amy. Hard to believe there is grass all around her, and no, I didn’t “erase” anything in Photoshop. This is the way I shot this image, I only added some contrast and converted it to black and white. More to come.

Congratulations Jackie & Bill

I had the priviledge of photographing Jackie & Bill’s wedding this past weekend.Â Jackie and Bill were a ton of fun, very laid back and just a great couple to be around.Â They could not have picked a more beautiful location for both, their ceremony and their reception.Â The Barn of Barrington has got to be my favorite place to shoot of all locations I have shot at.Â It’s a bit of a challenge to light it well because, well, it’s a barn, but the character of the place, and all the little rooms and nooks and cranies to shoot in, just make it an amazing place for a wedding.Â I took a bit of time last night to work a few images for Jackie and Bill so they can enjoy and share with their friends.Â I hope you guys enjoy the images as much as I enjoyed creating them.

WPPI 2009 in Review

I was going to do a post per day, but I decided to give a brief overview of what I did and learned at WPPI and share some of the images I captured. Â First of all I had theÂ privilegeÂ of attending classes with Marcus Bell, Rocco Ancora, Jerry Ghionis, Beth Forester, Bruce Dorn, and several others. Â I attended 10 classes in all that ranged from marketing to cinematic lighting, to how to bring out natural expressions on people. Â Of particular interest to me were the classes about senior portraiture and about cinematic lighting by Bruce Dorn. Â I came away from those classes with so many ideas and techniques that I am having a blast just thinking of the ways I am going to implement thatÂ knowledgeÂ this year for my couples and seniors. Â I also had the blessing of meeting some good friends like Rudy Arpia, Gloria Mesa, Mario Herrera, and others. Â We even had a lighting seminar with Mario Herrera for the spanish speaking photographer from the Foro de Fotografos, and I even got the privilege of assisting Mario with one of the groups. Â I don’t have a lot of pictures of the shoot we did with the model since I was trying to setup the shots and quiz the group as to how to light the model, but I did get a few. Â In any case, here are a few images, but scroll down for a slideshow I put together. Â Enjoy.

WPPI – Day 1

I have been blessed with the opportunity to attend the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) conference in Las Vegas. Â WPPI is the single largest gathering of wedding and portrait photographers in the US, and probably the world, and it only happens once a year. Â I will be going through an extensive number of training sessions ranging from workflow, to lighting, to marketing, to image enhancement, to hands on training with models on a live shoots. Â It will be 4 days of learning and growing. Â After hearing Jasmin Star at the Freedom to Succeed tour in Chicago, something she said changed my perspective on things and I decided that attending WPPI was the best investment I could make. Â She said, “you can rent equipment, but you cannot rent a brand”. Â That impacted me a great deal. Â Up to that time, I was set on acquiring more equipment and was saving for more lenses, cameras, and lighting gear. Â But after hearing her, I decided that I had invested very little in me, in my growth as an artist, as a professional, and as a business owner. Â So this year I decided to attend WPPI to improve myself first and my business. Â As of Sunday, I have attended 2 classes and 1 live demonstration by 5 of the top wedding photographers in the world, Joe Buissink, Dennis Regie, Yervant, Jerry Ghionis, and Bambi Cantrell. Â Just by watching them work and explain their thought process, I have seen things in a different light, and I have learned some techniques and ideas that will only improve my photography, and by doing so, my clients will get much better images of their special day. Â I am so excited to be here and to be making so many friends, and meeting in person other friends I had met in the forums I participate. Â I am sure I am gong to be very tired by the time the conference ends, but I know that my art, my photography, will have improved tremendously…it already has. Lighting Workshop

Well, it’s been a while since I posted any new content, but that is mostly because in my area, the winter months are a time where there are not very many events to do, but it’s no less busy with all the planning and tax prep that happens during this time of year.Â This past weekend I put together a lighting workshop for Spanish speaking wedding photographer and it was a great experience for me.Â I am really grateful for the opportunity to share some of what I know with others that are looking for ways to improve their photography through creative lighting.Â We also had the priviledge of Rudy Arpia giving a presentation about pricing, marketing, and his upcoming platform presentation at WPPI.Â We also had in attendance Jorge Torres of Photo & Video by Jorge, he is the president of the Hispanic Professional Photographers and Videographers Association (PPV-Chicago).Â The model for the class was Maggie, a good friend of mine that has helped me in several projects and was gracious enough to come out on a short notice and help with the class.Â The class was about how to use creative lighting techniques to create compelling images.Â This is the environment we were in,

But from inside this environment, and without changing anything in the environment, we learned how go from creating this type of an image,

to creating this type of an image, and all with 1 light.

Congratulations Tracey & Brian!

Tracey and Brian have been one of the best couples I have worked with, and amazingly beautiful.Â They had a moment where they saw each other prior to the ceremony, and it was a moment filled with emotion and tenderness.Â Tracey and Brian were married in St. Benedict Catholic Church in Fontana WI, then we went to Lake Geneva Lake for some pictures on the boat peers, and finally we went to Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay WI for some more pictures with the beautiful Fall colors and some amazing architecture.Â Finally the reception took place at Monte Carlo Room in Elkhorn WI.Â I took a moment to show some of the pictures to Tracey’s mom during the reception and she loved them so much that she said she wanted to see them as soon as possible.Â So, as a small gift of thanx for the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing wedding and equally amazing couple here are a couple of images from the shoot, but follow the link below to see a slide show of the wedding day.Â As always, you comments are encouraged and welcome.
